A headland forest of Shore Pine (Pinus contorta contorta) and Sitka Spruce (Picea sitchensis), silhouette against a magnificent backdrop of dusk blue sky and the Pacific Ocean.  The Cape Sebastian State Scenic Corridor which is located along the south Oregon coast between the cities of Gold Beach and Brookings, and encompasses a stretch of coastline that offers stunning vistas, rugged cliffs, bird watching, hiking, and diverse natural landscapes.  Geologically, Cape Sebastian offers a stunning display of features shaped by millions of years of natural processes, and is characterized by tectonic activity, erosion, and sedimentation.  The geological formations at Cape Sebastian consist of layered sedimentary rocks that provide a record of past environmental conditions and sea-level changes. These formations include sandstone, shale, mudstone, and conglomerate, each with distinctive characteristics reflecting the depositional environments in which they were formed, such as beaches, deltas, and shallow marine settings.  The rocks comprising Cape Sebastian and the surrounding coastline are primarily sedimentary in origin, dating back to the Mesozoic and Cenozoic eras. These sedimentary rocks were formed from the accumulation of marine sediments, including sand, silt, and clay, deposited on the ocean floor over millions of years. Tectonic activity, including subduction and uplift along the Cascadia Subduction Zone, has played a significant role in shaping the landscape, causing the rocks to be folded, faulted, and uplifted over time.  Archaeologically, evidence suggests that Native American tribes have lived along this section of the south Oregon coast for at least 10,000 years. These early inhabitants were comprised of several tribes, including the Coquille, Tututni (Chetco), and Tolowa Dee-ni’ peoples.  The Cape Sebastian State Scenic Corridor is a must-visit destination for anyone traveling along this remote section of the south Oregon coast.
