DescriptionSeveral countries emerged from the disbanded French colonial territories of French West Africa and French Equatorial Africa. The French kept their hands in, with, among other tools, the French African Community franc.Chad (Tschad) is a landlocked country in northern central Africa. It is one of the constituent members of the Central African Currency Union. The country has an internal structural “misalignment” between northerners, who tend to be Arabized, nomads or former nomals. Muslims, and southerners, who tend to be non-Muslim, farmers, non-Arabized. The groups have been fighting each other for centuries, and have not stopped.It has been habitual, on the collecting side of numismatics, for “Africa” to exclude the Mediterranean coastal states, which are typically lumped in with the other Arab states in the category “Middle East.” Generally speaking, there was a colonial period and an independent period.By “Modern World Coins” we mean here, generally, the round, flat, shiny metal objects that people have used for money and still do. “Modern,” though, varies by location.
